The Government of Vanuatu officially launched its National Loss and Damage Policy and Implementation Plan, becoming one of the first countries globally to adopt a dedicated national framework addressing the impacts of climate change that cannot be prevented or adapted to.
Key Features:
- Covers economic and non-economic losses from both extreme weather and slow-onset events (e.g. sea level rise).
- Includes 85 directives across 11 thematic areas.
- Backed by a 5-year implementation plan (cost at 11.7 billion Vatu).
- Introduces:
- A Loss and Damage Working Group
- Annual Gap Reports
- A national funding mechanism
- A Climate Finance Country Platform
- Emphasizes human rights, traditional knowledge, and locally led action.
The policy marks Vanuatu’s leadership in climate justice and calls on the global community to address the loss and damage finance gap
