The Board of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD) is convening an extraordinary meeting to consider Nepal’s urgent request for financial support following devastating Bhotekoshi floods triggered by an ice-and-rock avalanche on 26 August 2026. The disaster caused an estimated 2.69 billion USD in economic loss and damage, with recovery and reconstruction needs reaching at least 4.71 billion USD.
Following Nepal’s formal request for urgent assistance, Board members representing developing countries called for an extraordinary meeting to consider a provisional allocation of resources to enable a rapid response.
The meeting presents a critical test of the FRLD’s ability to respond to urgent loss and damage needs. Beyond Nepal, the discussions could help inform the development of rapid disbursement modalities and operational procedures, including under the Barbados Implementation Modalities (BIM), to ensure the Fund can respond effectively to future climate-related disasters.
This is the first extraordinary meeting of the FRLD Board.
This living document will provide live updates on the discussions, including key summary highlights.
