The COP 26 Presidency loss and damage event "Exploring Loss and Damage" was held on Adaptation and Loss and Damage day on November 8th and was accompanied with the following description:

"Even with a rapid scale-up of adaptation action, climate change will still have an impact. So the risk of losses and damages from climate change is growing. This session will bring together experts to deepen our understanding of loss and damage as well as debate how we can take practical actions to avert, minimise and address loss and damage."

The event began with a notable intervention from Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, who spoke about addressing Loss and Damage in the context of the Caribbean, during which she explored, the inadequacy of insurance, the need for debt payment relief when disasters do take place, and the moral injustice of loss and damage impacting nations that have contributed least to total global carbon emissions.

Following Prime Minister, Mottley's intervention, the participants present in the room were invited to take part in a work shop and share incite, frustrations and hopes for action on loss and damage in response to a set of provocative loss and damage themed cartoons. Notable interventions came from an large number of participants in the room including: Prof. Saleemul Huq (ICCCAD), Colin McQuistan (Practical Action), and Sadie DeCoste (Loss and Damage Youth Coalition).

The session finished with a powerful speech from Loss and Damage Youth Coalition Co-Founder Ineza Umuhoza Grace from Rwanda.
