UNHEARD, UNCHARTED: A HOLISTIC VISION FOR ADDRESSING ‘NON-ECONOMIC’ LOSS AND DAMAGE

As climate change escalates, many people around the world are devastatingly affected by its impacts, which are both economic and non-economic. Economic loss and damage can be defined in economic terms and they include the loss of resources, goods, and services while non-economic loss and damage are those that people value cannot be given an economic equivalent and they include losses and damages to cultures, heritage, and mental health. Non-economic loss and damage have been part of the global lexicon on climate change for several years. However, following the establishment of the funding arrangements and fund for Loss and Damage in Sharm El Sheikh at COP 27, there is an urgent need to conduct research to understand how non-economic loss and damage will be addressed and included in the new funding channel. This report aims to enhance the global understanding of noneconomic loss and damage, including its assessment and how it can addressed. The report also presents a compelling argument for the importance of prioritising non-economic loss and damage, and offers practical recommendations for policy and practice.
