The Loss and Damage Collaboration (L&DC) is Hiring a COP27 Coordinator!

The Loss and Damage Collaboration (L&DC) is looking for a COP27 Coordinator to coordinate the Loss and Damage community in the run-up to and at COP 27, and to support our communications work. While the work is ad-hoc in nature, the COP27 coordinator is expected to work the equivalent three days a week from September 31st to October 28th and full time at COP 27 (03 -21 November 2022) in Sharm El Sheik Egypt, for a total of 48 days. 

This is a great opportunity for someone with an understanding of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process and a keen interest in the Loss and Damage thematic. The position is remote and residents of any country are eligible to apply. You will find the role descriptions and link to the application forms below.

Roles and responsibilities

The main role of the COP 27 coordinator is to coordinate the Loss and Damage community in the run-up to and at COP 27 and to support our communications work. 

Key tasks:

Provide logistical support to the L&DC delegation in the run-up to and on the ground at COP 27;
Attend weekly preparatory meetings in the lead-up to the COP of the L&DC; 

Coordinate the L&DC at COP 27 including by: 

- Organizing daily L&DC meetings, press briefings and events to profile L&D and the L&DC at COP 27;

- Facilitate in-person meetings between L&DC members and negotiators, members of the press, and potential funding partners;

- Developing and mailing out a daily newsletter detailing key L&D events, meetings and negotiations taking place for the L&DC membership;

- Engage and coordinate with the L&DC membership and civil society partners such as Climate Action Network (CAN) via Skype, Signal and WhatsApp chats and before and during COP 27. 

Create and deliver updates to philanthropies and other interested parties; 

Provide support to the L&DC communications and Advocacy and Outreach teams including to: 

- Support the development of content for our Twitter and Instagram and the L&DC website including: daily  and thematic update tweet threads, event, press conference and negotiation live tweets, tweets profiling L&D-focused protest at COP27, COP27 summary tweet thread, Instagram explainer posts, Instagram COP27 update posts and COP27 summary post;

- Help the communications coordinator keep the policy library of the L&DC website up to date as policy briefs and papers are released in the lead-up to COP 27 and search for papers to be included in the library;

Map the Loss and Damage-related negotiations, meetings, events and side events happening at COP 27 and the loss and damage actors who will attend COP 27 in a living document to be shared with L&DC members;   

Support the L&DC’s communications coordinator to develop and send out a COP27 cheat sheet for journalists and a COP27 communications tool kit.

Work closely with the L&DC coordinators, L&DC project leads (Santiago Network for Loss and Damage, Loss and Damage Finance, Advocacy and Outreach as well as the leads of the Art and Culture program),

Working with L&DC partners to help them integrate loss and damage into their demands, messages and campaigns;

Produce a report detailing the work done by the COP 27 coordinator for our funding reporting. 

Essential qualifications 

Strong written and verbal communication skills in English to convey messages in a clear and effective manner.

Strong interpersonal skills and good team worker, 

Good organizational and time management skills, including  the ability to work independently and with limited supervision,

Some experience in climate change and/or social justice campaigning, advocacy, coordination, organizing, research, and/or writing.

Proficiency with tools for working online (e.g. Slack, Google Docs/Sheets/Slides/Drive, Email, Social media). 

Reliable access to the internet and the ability to work well with others remotely. 

Assets for the role 

(These are nice-to-haves, but are not required)

Knowledge or experience working on loss and damage from climate change

Experience designing and delivering training or workshops online and in-person

Experience managing outreach processes to partners

Proficiency in multiple languages 

Employment terms

Location: Remote (in lead up to the COP 27) + In person (in Sharm El-Sheikh Egypt)

Rate: $300 (USD) per day 

Timeframe: Approximately 48 days between September to November. 

Required to attend COP 27 in Sharm-el-Sheikh in Egypt in person from the 03 to the 21 of November 2022 (COP 27 is scheduled to end on the 18th of November COP however it may overrun and therefore we have pre-booked accommodation until the 21st of November). Please note that during the COP your hours will most likely be longer and you may be required to work a greater number of days due to the intensity of the negotiations. (Expenses for accommodation and per diem will be covered by the L&DC).
